Outdoor recreation enthusiasts are being asked to steer clear of an area south of Dawson Creek where a leak at a gas well was detected early Wednesday morning.

The site is west of One Island Lake, about 55 kilometres south of the community of about 10,000 people in northeast B.C.

The well is leaking sweet gas, according to officials, which is relatively free of hydrogen sulphide which can be fatal to humans.

Cause of the leak, discovered by a water hauler working in the area, is a failed flange fitting and foul play is not suspected, Dawson Creek RCMP said.

The well's owner, Apache Corporation of Houston Texas, expects to have the leak capped iin 12 to 24 hours.
