The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit was called in to deal with a suspicious device found in an abandoned vehicle in Prince George.

Prince George RCMP called in the Explosive Disposal Unit to deal with a suspicious device found in an abandoned vehicle on Feb. 21.

Just before 7 a.m., police received a report of a vehicle that crashed into a fence in the 4600 block of First Avenue. Police located the vehicle, but discovered the occupants had not remained at the scene after the crash.

Officers noticed there was some smoke damage inside the car, which did not appear related to the crash.

The RCMP were unable to contact the registered owner of the vehicle, and contacted a towing company to remove it. But when the towing company unloaded the vehicle at the tow yard, crews located a suspicious device in the vehicle.

RCMP officers secured the area, and waited for the Explosive Disposal Unit to arrive from the Lower Mainland.

The unit arrived at the location around 4:30 p.m. and successfully disabled the device.

Investigators are asking to speak with anyone who saw the crash or has video surveillance of the area between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Feb. 21.

Anyone with information is asked to call Prince George RCMP at 250-561-3300. Tips can also be made anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477), or online at www.northernbccrimestoppers.ca (English only).
