New name, new outreach, new records!
That summarizes 2020 for Northern BC Crime Stoppers as the society broke several records in its 35th year of operations, along with some notable changes to its day-to-day operations.
Last year, the public sent in 997 tips to help police in solving crimes across the region, a 25 per cent increase compared to 750 in 2019.
This led to 31 arrests, more than double its total of 14 last year, 10 closed cases and 11 cash rewards, as well as $144,000 in drugs and $7,500 in cash were seized and recovered.
“The Board of Directors of Northern BC Crime Stoppers would like to thank the citizens of Northern BC for continuing to provide vital information that has led to a record year for tips and arrests in 2020,” says the organization in a statement today (Jan. 8).
“We would also like to thank the hard working and dedicated members of the RCMP in Prince George and neighbouring communities for continuing to support this crime fighting program.”
With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing some people to stay home and allowing them to take care of personal items, this led to a record-setting year as well for the Northern BC Crime Stoppers biannual Shed-It initiative.
Last year raised more than $5,000, marked as the most successful campaign in its four-year history, as residents donated to have personal documents safely shredded.
The non-profit’s new name was unveiled in November as a result of the increase in tip-line calls and the disbanding of other sister groups in regional communities.
Northern BC Crime Stoppers now serves Prince George, north to the Yukon border, south to Williams Lake, west to Smithers and east to Alberta’s border.
The organization is encouraging anyone that has information about community crimes that could be valuable to police to contact Northern BC Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or go online to www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca.
