The second annual Prince George Hospice Colour Walk will march forward with a few adjustments for COVID-19 social distancing.
Last year marked the first annual event, which was hosted at the UNBC campus and over 300 people supported the fundraiser.
Event participants walked a designated route as coloured powder was thrown from various sponsor stations to celebrate the lives of loved ones lost.
“Last year, the community showed their support for Hospice and we couldn’t have been more grateful,” says Executive Director Donna Flood in a news release, describing her delight for the Colour Walk's early success.
"The 2nd Annual Hospice Colour Walk was originally scheduled for May 24," adds Flood, "However, due to imposed COVID-19 restrictions, we have gotten creative with this year’s fundraiser to avoid a complete cancellation, especially after our Antique Fair and High Tea fundraisers were cancelled, alongside the closure of our retail store.
“Not wanting to lose the importance and meaning of the Hospice Colour Walk, we have decided to go ahead with a modified safe physical distancing-friendly Hospice Colour Walk.”
The 2020 Hospice Colour Walk is encouraging Prince George residents to walk around in their own neighbourhood, backyard or their favourite walking trails and spread it out in the month of May so each person can reach 100km.
Along the way, participants will be trying to raise pledges to support the Society.
That 100-km goal can be shared between a family or a couple as a family of four, for example, can each commit to walking a distance of 25km each.
With the commitment, the organization is also be encouraging people to wear a certain colour to keep up with the Colour Walk theme and share their stories on why and who they are walking for.
Prince George Hospice Society says donations are desperately needed right now, especially after the loss of important fundraising dollars from the cancellation of other major events.
“Participants will also have an opportunity to share their colours of choice - along with their stories – on the PG Hospice Colour Walk Facebook Page,” says Flood, summarizing the importance of the fundraising event from a perspective of uniting the community during uncertain times.
“We are hoping the Prince George community will find comfort, courage and inspiration throughout the month of May by participating in the 2nd Annual Hospice Colour Walk and completing the 100km distance.”
