Snow in Prince George forecast for Sunday

One of the warmest Octobers the city has ever experienced is coming to an end, with freezing temperatures on the way this weekend

Looking at the Prince George weather forecast for the next seven days, this is probably a good time to find your snow shovel, ice scraper and winter clothing.

You’re probably going to need them soon because snow and cold weather is on the way.

Environment Canada is predicting rain or snow flurries for Sunday evening with a high of only 4C that day, dropping to -4 C at night. The cool wet weather is expected to continue into Monday with a 60 per cent chance of rain showers or snow flurries combined with a high of 2 C and a chilly overnight low of -8 C.

Today will probably be the last warm day of October. A high of 16 C is predicted with winds gusting to 60 kilometres per hour under a mix of sun and cloud. That’s double the normal high temperature of 8 C for this day.

Thursday’s expected high/low is 13 C/2 C with a 30 percent chance of showers in the morning.

The skies will clear Friday with a high of 10 C and a low of -3 C, climbing only to 7 C on Saturday with a forecast low of -3 C that day.

October has been abnormally warm and dry with high temperatures above normal on 13 of the first 17 days this month. Eleven days this month reached 15 C or warmer and there were just three days - Oct. 11,12 and 13 – when the lows dipped below freezing.

According to weatherstats.ca, from the start of the year in January through to Oct . 17 (Wednesday), this ranks as the driest year in Prince George dating back to 1920.

We’ve had just 266.8 mm of precipitation so far in 2023. Last year at this time, 440.8 mm of moisture was recorded, and the two previous years we had 425.4 mm in 2021 and 654.2 in 2020.The highest Prince George total to Oct 17 was 725.9 mm in 1982 and the city average is 467 mm.
