Expect to be shoveling snow in the days ahead, Environment Canada advises.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Prince George and surrounding areas, with up to 15 cm of snow expected over the next few days.

The warning will remain in effect until Friday midday.

The snowfall is linked to a low-pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska, which is expected to bring snow to parts of northern and central British Columbia, including the Bulkley Valley, Williston, Stuart-Nechako, McGregor, Cariboo, Pine Pass and the Yellowhead Highway from Tête Jaune Cache to the Alberta border.

Snowfall began early Wednesday and is expected to intensify as the day progresses, transitioning from light flurries to more consistent snowfall by tonight. Heavier snow is expected to continue into Thursday, with the system moving out by Friday afternoon.

Travellers are warned to expect reduced visibility in heavy snow and are advised to be cautious, especially as road surfaces may become slippery and difficult to navigate. In areas of higher elevation, particularly on mountain highways, weather conditions can change rapidly, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Drivers are encouraged to turn on headlights, maintain a safe following distance and adjust their driving for winter conditions.

Snow accumulation may impact roadways, walkways, and parking lots, making them slippery. The public is reminded to use winter tires and carry chains, especially in mountainous areas.
