A special weather statement is in effect for Prince George this evening (Jan. 1).

As of 4:20 p.m., Environment Canada says a 'strong winter storm' is approaching the northern capital's region and could come into full effect by tomorrow afternoon (Jan. 2).

The statement says the storm appears to be pushing towards Prince George and heading southeast to the central interior, Thompson-Okanagan and Kootenays.

Snow is then expected to shift northwards by Friday morning (Jan. 3) and could continue to fall all day long.

"The highest snowfall amounts are expected to be in the Columbias, the Yellowhead, Williston, and the Bulkley Valley," reads Environment Canada's special weather statement, but they don't give a specific amount of predicted snow before the weekend.

"In addition, there is a chance of freezing rain for the central interior as the band of snow pushes northwards on Friday morning."

The agency encourages everyone to follow the forecast and to check for updates on road conditions via Drive B.C.
