For some, it’s a dream to walk across a post-secondary stage to receive a diploma or degree.
However, as a result of COVID-19, that opportunity will have to be experienced in the digital world as UNBC has announced it will be switching to a virtual convocation on June 26 to celebrate its 2020 graduating class.
As per the B.C. government, gatherings of more than 50 people are banned until further notice, which requires social and physical distancing, something the university says it's taking very seriously.
"Ensuring the health and safety of our graduating class, their families and friends, our faculty and staff is our number one priority," said UNBC interim President Dr. Geoff Payne in a news release.
"It is also important that we celebrate and recognize the achievements of our graduates. This virtual ceremony allows us to do that without any health risk."
According to the school, students are encouraged to send a personal message, video or photo to appear on the screen when their name is called during the ceremony.
They will also receive their graduation parchment, regardless of whether they choose to send content or not.
"We understand this is a difficult and challenging time for all of our students, especially those in the Class of 2020 as they complete their final semester in alternate delivery modes," Dr. Payne added.
"We appreciate their understanding and patience to adapt in this rapidly evolving situation. All of us at UNBC congratulate them on their achievements."
Via a special livestream on June 26, UNBC students who takes classes in Prince George, Terrace, Wilp Wilxo'oskwhl Nisga'a and Quesnel can participate.
