Over 80 students at Heritage Elementary participate in the school’s primary and intermediate choirs. With a growing music program, the school has decided to take part in this year’s CBC Music Class Challenge.
Every fall, CBC Music in association with MusicCounts — the charity of the Juno Awards — launches a contest to engage music classes across the country with Canadian Music.
Students from grades two to seven meet every week to enjoy and learn about music. The choirs decided to cover Canadian rocker Joel Plaskett’s hit song “Nowhere With You.”
Each year, CBC Music pre-approves a list of Canadian Songs, then asks music teachers to pick one and teach their classes a cover version.
It could be a note for note cover, or something completely their own. Once the performance has been recorded on video and submitted, it gets uploaded to the CBC Music Class’s YouTube channel.
Three judges will choose six winners who each will receive a $5,000 classroom recording kit.
Heritage’s cover of “Nowhere With You” was recorded with the help of bass player Dan Scott, and videographers Erin Bohn and Jessica Bonin, and choir director and guitarist, Elizabeth Morris.
College Height Elementary’s division four class also entered the competition singing a blend of the songs “I’s the B’y” and “You Got to Run”.
