The UNBC Timberwolves are going to be waiting a bit longer to see if sports will commence in 2021.
Canada West was originally supposed to announce on Oct. 8 if the second term of the new season would go ahead due to COVID-19 after first term sports were cancelled.
On June 8, the Timberwolves learned its 2020 soccer season had been cancelled, based on a Canada West decision.
The conference UNBC competes in for collegiate sports as no competition is set to take place, including regular-season, playoff or championship games.
Canada West joined Ontario and Atlantic university sport associations to cancel all first-term schedules.
"It's heartbreaking, it's never an easy thing to tell student-athletes that their season has been cancelled," said UNBC Athletics Director Loralyn Murdoch in a virtual news conference on June 8 as the decision was ultimately ratified by a vote of 17 schools in Canada West.
"The health and safety of those student-athletes and of all the staff involved was first and foremost and how things stand right now with the COVID-19 and provincial health organizations and the recommendations, we just couldn't see a way to get those sports going in terms of contact, we can't keep them two metres apart."
Basketball seasons are now in jeopardy as well, with no decision now coming until Nov. 2, almost a month later, from membership.
Other sports that could be impacted include hockey (men's and women's), volleyball (men's and women's), rugby 7s (women's) – along with Canada West championships in curling (men's and women's) swimming (men's and women's), track and field (men's and women's), and wrestling (men's and women's).
