Pickleball has officially come to Prince George.
What on earth is pickleball, you might ask? It’s a paddle sport that not only has a funny name but combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong.
Prince George now has four brand new pickleball courts ready for public use.
The courts can be found at Fairburn Park, near the intersection of Foothills Boulevard and North Nechako Road (access off of Fairburn Place).
They are the first four public pickleball courts in the city, although the Prince George Tennis and Pickleball Club also has courts available to members.
“Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America, and the city has seen a high demand for pickleball courts in recent years,” says parks supervisor Chris Bjorn in a press release. “The sport is particularly popular amongst seniors and, since we opened the courts this summer, they have been heavily used. The city is working with community groups to investigate whether pickleball courts might work in other areas of the city.”
The courts are available for drop-in and can be booked on the city's website.
People over the age of 40 are invited to try out the sport for free during a city-run pickleball session. It's happening on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Glenview Elementary School.
