The Yellowhead Rotary Club recently donated $8,746.81 to the Harwin Elementary School Parents Advisory Council (PAC).
“I think there's a lot of need for youth within our city," said Garnet Weston, the president of Yellowhead Rotary. “And I think it's vital to provide a strong foundation for those youth.”
The Rotary Club makes yearly donations to support schools and youth in Prince George. Last year The Rotary Club donated to Ron Brent Elementary School.
These funds were raised through monthly 50/50 draws, as well as through Yellowhead Rotary's Business Breakfast 50/50 draw at the Festival of Trees.
“This money helps especially with small PACS because fundraising is hard these days,” said Jennifer Boots, chair of the Harwin PAC. “Especially in this economy, and with inner-city schools like Harwin, we see money come in, so we can help all the kids at the school equally.”
The Harwin PAC is a small group so this donation will be a big help, she said.
“With the Harwin PAC, there are only two or three people, including myself, that show up for the monthly meetings,” said Boots. “So the organization of fundraisers falls on the same people all the time. We can only do so much between all our schedules. Because Harwin is an inner-city school, there are a lot of families struggling, so then not everyone can participate in the fundraisers.”
The money from the Rotary Club will go to support programs at Harwin like their swimming program, hockey program as well as other after-school programs.
