Duchess Park moves on to medal round, Cedars boys still undefeated at single-A provincials

High school provincial volleyball championships wrap up Saturday

Gold is now out of the question for the Duchess Park Condors boys volleyball team but they still have a shot at completing a provincial medal trifecta.

The Condors will be playing for bronze Saturday at 2 p.m. at the double-A championship in Langley after they lost their semifinal match in straight sets, 25-20, 25-18, 25-15 to the South Kamloops Titans.

“They fought hard, especially the first couple sets, but South Kam’s a big team, really solid all the way around,” said Condors head coach Duncan Elliot. “They just couldn’t pull it out.”

The Condors will play Langley Christian with a chance to repeat as bronze medalists.

“Last year we got third, the year before that they got first, we’ll see if we can make it three in a row,” said Elliot.

The D.P. Todd Trojans topped Surrey Christian 2-0 (25-17, 25-17) and will play Mennonite Educational Institute for fifth place Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Trojans have already guaranteed their highest-ever placing at a senior boys volleyball championship.

Meanwhile, at the single-A boys championship in Vancouver/North Vancouver, the Cedars Christian Eagles blanked Nanaimo 3-0 in the round of 16 and swept Vernon Christian in straight sets in the quarterfinal round.

The Eagles will take on St. Ann’s Academy in a semifinal Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Lions Gate Christian gym.

The Prince George Polars will play for 15th place at the triple-A championship in Victoria. PGSS lost back-to-back matches Friday, 2-0 to Eric Hamber and 2-0 to Pinetree. The Polars face Reynolds Saturday at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, at the triple-A girls championship in Dawson Creek, the Duchess Park Condors and College Heights Cougars are back on a collision course. They played each other to start the tournament on Thursday (a 2-1 Cougars’ win) and will face each other again in a consolation round playoff Saturday at 10:45 a.m. The winners advance to the seventh-place playoff at 3:45 p.m.

The Condors and Cougars won their round-of-16 playoffs Friday, College Heights defeated Charles Hays 3-0, while Duchess Park dispatched Stelly’s 3-1. In the quarterfinals, the Cougars lost 3-0 to W.L.Seaton and Vernon eliminated the Condors (set score not available).

PGSS dropped a 3-0 decision to Brentwood College in the round of 16, then lost a consolation match2-0 to Wellington. The Polars will play for 13th place Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against the  Garibald-Charles Hays winner.

The Shas Ti Kelly Road Grizzlies can finish as high as ninth at the 16-team double-A girls championship in West Vancouver. The Grizzlies started the day Friday with a round-of-16 3-0 loss to West Pont Gray Academy, bit followed that up with a 2-1 consolation triumph over St. Thomas More.

Shas Ti Kely Road plays host Mulgrave Saturday at 8:30 a.m.. The winner will play for ninth against Saturday’s Kelowna Christian/Langley Fundamental winner.

Cedars Christian Eagles are matched with Mt. Sentinel in an 8:30 a.m. consolation playoff at the single A girls championship in Nelson. The winners will play for 13th place.  

The Eagles beat Meadowridge 2-0 Friday after losing their round-of-16 playoff 3-0 to Vancouver Christian.
