Kodiak Red turns silver at provincials

Kodiak Red entered the provincial championship tournament as the sixth seed. By the time the event was finished, the boys from Prince George had silver medals hanging around their necks.

Kodiak Red, a 15-and-under team from the Prince George Youth Volleyball Club, secured the second-place finish this past weekend in Abbotsford. In the gold-medal match, Kodiak Red faced the top-ranked Seaside Sixpack of Delta and fell 25-19, 22-25, 18-16.

Earlier in the playoff round, Kodiak Red got past the ninth-seeded Fraser Valley Volleyball Club 25-8, 19-25, 15-5 in the semifinals. Kodiak Red opened playoffs with a 24-26, 25-20, 15-13 decision against Focus Elevate, a fourth-ranked team with players from Vancouver and Burnaby.

In preliminary play, Kodiak Red earned victories against Orangemen Stelzer of Abbotsford (25-13, 25-17), BCO of North Vancouver (25-8, 25-9) and Air Attack of Richmond (25-17, 25-22).

Kodiak Red is formed by Colby Graham, Nolan Minck, William Bourque, Nick Harding, Greyam Heppner, Christopher Magrath, Kyle McKee, Zach Ohori, Matthew Shand and Graydon Wolitski. Graham and Minck were chosen as tournament all-stars.

Kodiak Red is coached by Glenn Wong and Hans Minck.

A second PGYVC team - Kodiak Black - also competed in the 15-and-under division and placed 14th in a field of 18.
