More than $50,000 worth of community grants-in-aid were approved at the Fraser Fort-George Regional District’s Dec. 19 board of directors meeting.

A total of 10 grants worth $50,402 were approved for groups in five of the district’s seven rural electoral areas.

Here’s a list of grants, broken down by electoral area.

Electoral Area A (Salmon River-Lakes):

  • $3,000 for a volunteer appreciation dinner for the Pilot Mountain Fire Fighter Club to be held in January,
  • $2,500 for insurance and operating expenses for the Pilot Mountain Recreation Commission and
  • $672 for tables at the Nukko Lake Recreation Commission.

An application form from the Nukko Lake commission said that the funds were to purchase four six-foot tables that had been damaged and become unsafe to use.

As for the request from the Pilot Mountain Commission, it said the funds would also be used to purchase a new whiteboard.

Electoral Area C (Chilako River-Nechako):

  • $15,000 for skating rink upgrades for the Beaverly Community Association,
  • $14,830 for building and grounds upgrades for the Dusty Trail Riders and
  • $2,000 for Halloween fireworks for the Beaverly Community Association.

The application for the skating rink upgrades said that one corner quarter of the rink had sunk and cracks are forming along its surface. The funds are being used to resurface the rink as part of an effort to improve accessibility at the Beaverly Community Association’s facilities.

Beyond the $15,000 the association requested from the regional district, the application also said the organization is applying for $19,000 more in accessibility grants.

The Dusty Trail Riders are using their grant money to help build a new dressage arena as the 1970s-era arena “is in dire need of renovation,” according to the application.

The club is contributing $5,000 of its own dollars to the project. On top of that, it said that Rona has donated some lumber and is offering a reduced rate for rails, Northern Acreage is providing a reduced rate for posts and KC Trucking is offering a reduced rate for trucking and sand for the project.

Electoral Area D (Tabor Lake-Stone Creek):

  • $2,000 for rink upgrades for the Pineview Recreation Commission.

The commission’s grant application said that the money would be used to purchase and install new lighting, to rent a sweeper to clear the rink off prior to flooding and to purchase a packer to pack snow before the rink is flooded.

Electoral Area F (Willow River-Upper Fraser Valley):

  • $4,500 for insurance and operating expenses for the Sinclair Mills Education and Recreational Club.

Electoral Area G (Crooked River-Parsnip):

  • $4,900 for a water and sewer engineering study for the Summit Lake Community Association and
  • $3,000 for an automated external defibrillator (AED) for the Bear Lake Recreation Association’s community hall.

The Summit Lake Community Association’s application said that the study would help it determine whether its community hall can support the addition of two indoor washrooms.
