Prince George had faster fish in the pool this past weekend.
Eleven Special Olympians from B.C.’s northern capital cleaned up 28 total medals from the last swimming meet of the year, including 12 gold from the Prince Rupert competition.
There were 40 athletes from branches across the north and central regions.
Carla Caputo out-swam everyone in her division by winning all four of the races she participated in; that would be the 50-metre backstroke, 100-metre breaststroke, and 50 and 100-metre freestyles.
“These athletes have been training consistently twice a week for the past seven months, were in top form, and were excited to compete,” said Special Olympics Prince George spokesperson Wilma VanHage in a statement. “It’s not only the competition, but also the travelling, and the chance to meet up with other athletes that adds to the excitement.”
This was the second annual Special Olympics Prince Rupert Swim Meet.
The medal results for Prince George swimmers are as follows:
GOLD
- Carla Caputo = 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m breaststroke
- Greg Cole = 100m backstroke, 50m breaststroke
- Josiah Lecher = 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke
- Josh Pudney = 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke
- Sam Russell = 100m freestyle, Individual Medley
SILVER
- Amanda Glazier = 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke
- Josh Pudney = 50m freestyle, 100m breaststroke
- Sam Russell = 100m backstroke
- Spencer Rourke = 50m breaststroke
- Marinka VanHage = 100m breaststroke, 50m breaststroke
BRONZE
- Greg Cole = 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle
