The Prince George Public Library's very own pirate ship, the Merry Bookaneer, has set sail in the children's section of the Bob Harkins branch.

The nine-foot long ship will be officially launched during a ceremony Saturday at 11 a.m.

"Young pirates from across the city are invited to attend in costume. They will be able to make their very own pirate hat and get their face painted at the launch," said Neil Godbout, administrative communications co-ordinator.

Allan Wilson, chief librarian, will be juggling swords during the event, and Becky Stark, children's librarian, will read some of the library's best pirate tales during a special story-time aboard the ship, starting at 11:30 a.m.

The custom-designed vessel was built by Y-Knot Woodcraft of Prince George, with materials donated by Timberspan Wood Products.

"We built most of it between Christmas and New Year's," said Marius St. Pierre of Y-Knot Woodcraft.

"It took about 80 man-hours to finish and that's being conservative," said St. Pierre who sends along thanks to Ken Foot for helping with the project.
