After a lengthy search, the City of Prince George has finally hired a senior advisor for intergovernmental relations.

Catharine Sikobe attended Tuesday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs to introduce herself though she doesn’t officially start work until March 3.

At previous meetings of the committee, director of administrative services Eric Depenau had said the city had spent many months looking for someone to fill the role, at one point switching the designation from a manager to a senior advisor to try to broaden the pool of available candidates.

“The department is pleased to welcome Catharine Sikobe to the role of senior advisor, intergovernmental relations,” Depenau said in a statement.

“This position helps the city meet its commitments under various agreements, like the memorandum of understanding with the Lheidli T’enneh First Nation and Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, the Veteran and Family Community Covenant and the HEART partnership with the Province of BC, alongside council’s other intergovernmental priorities.”

Another city spokesperson told The Citizen that Sikobe previously served in the city’s legislative services department for three years. She came to the city after graduating from the Northern Development Initiative Trust’s Local Government Management Internship Program and spending time working for the Village of Telkwa in various roles.
