UPDATE: Wildfire southeast of Prince George grows slightly, but is 100 per cent guarded

New fire located near Opatcho Lake, east of Buckhorn Lake

9:30 a.m. 

The Opatcho Lake wildfire burning southeast of Prince George has grown in size, but crews have made progress.

According to B.C. Wildfire Service Information Officer Molly Blower, the blaze has grown to eight hectares, but its 100 per cent guarded.

There are 10 firefighters handling this fire roughly 15 km east of Buckhorn Lake.

We will bring more information as it becomes available.

5:35 p.m. (May 13)

Though there’s little information at this time, the B.C. Wildfire Service has confirmed a blaze is burning within driving distance of Prince George.

PrinceGeorgeMatters has confirmed via Information Officer Molly Blower that a wildfire is unfolding southeast of the city near Opatcho Lake, estimated to currently be five hectares in size.

She adds air tankers are on scene.

There’s no confirmation at this time on what caused the fire or how many fire crews are on scene this evening (May 13).

Opatcho Lake is roughly 15 km from Buckhorn lake, which is east off Highway 97 heading south of Prince George.

Blower says the situation is still unfolding.
