A new festival called Farm Fest, which aims to raise awareness of local food production, is coming to Prince George.
Farm Fest will bring together local farmers and vendors to showcase locally grown produce and food and will also include live music, visual art and games.
The event will take over part of Third Avenue downtown on Saturday, Sept. 15 and coincide with the regular downtown Farmers Market and the Wilson Square Market.
Farm Fest is a partnership between local growers Hope Farm Organics, restaurant Betulla Burning and the Omineca Arts Centre, which is an artist-run centre grounded in community development.
“While this will be a fun event, one of the most important aspects of Farm Fest is giving local residents the opportunity to learn more about agriculture in our northern climate,” says Roanne Whitticase, event planner and Omineca board member. “We hope people will leave Farm Fest with a desire to start growing and will take advantage of workshops and online resources we tell them about to learn how to get started.”
The event will also provide the opportunity for local growers, farmers and institutes to connect with workshops and online resources for further education and involvement.
Farm Fest attendees will be able to take part in three workshops at Hub Space, where they can learn more about growing food and producing goods.
Fruit Wine Making 101 with Noemie Touchette takes place from 10 to 11 a.m.; Voluntary Simplicity with Debra Moffatt takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and Urban Gardening with Don Basserman takes place from 1 to 2 p.m.
To coincide with Farm Fest, the Omineca Arts Centre is hosting a visual art exhibition and art activities focused on food production from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an opening reception at 1 p.m. for the exhibition, which runs until Oct. 11.
