The first four days of 2021 saw more family members lost as a result of COVID-19.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 45 virus-linked deaths since Thursday (Dec. 31) among 2,211 new infections found across B.C., rising the grand total since January last year to 54,201.
This includes 169 out of Northern Health for a new regional total of 2,186 since March 2020.
Dr. Henry explained most of the deaths over the weekend were seniors and elders, two of whom she said were First Nations elders, as well as some community-based cases as well.
Close to 950 people have died from COVID-19 in B.C.
Of the 6,823 active cases, 76 people are admitted into critical care or ICU among 351 hospitalizations across the province, and 45,229 recoveries.
There are also 8,785 people being actively monitored for the virus after coming into contact with someone who tested positive, but Dr. Henry said this excludes Northern Health as a technical error is still being tended to.
Case counts over the last four days are as follows:
- 565 = Thursday to Friday
- 607 = Friday to Saturday
- 500 = Saturday to Sunday
- 539 = Sunday to Monday
Earlier today, Northern Health unveiled a 12th resident that died from COVID-19 in Prince George's Jubilee Lodge as well as an outbreak total of 60 infections since Dec. 12, including 48 residents and 12 staff.
Eight additional cases were also reported among the outbreak in the Internal Medicine Unit at University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC), bringing its total to 21, 10 patients and 11 staff members, since Dec. 29.
Dr. Henry also touched on vaccine distribution as more is set to come to B.C. in the first quarter of 2021.
In Northern Health, 1,950 Pfizer doses and 700 Moderna doses have been inoculated to long-term care and assisted-living residents, as well as healthcare workers in the region.
This week, 975 more Moderna vaccines are heading to northern B.C. out of 16,575 coming to the province.
To date, B.C. has distributed 34,125 Pfizer doses and 20,500 of Moderna for a grand vaccination total of 54,625.
Students in Prince George also went back to the classroom today after a two-week winter break.
