Joel McKay named chair of UNBC’s board of governors

McKay is the CEO of the Northern Development Initiative Trust and a UNBC grad student.

Northern Development Initiative Trust CEO Joel McKay has been named the chairperson of the UNBC board of governors.

The CEO of the Northern Development Initiative Trust has been named the new chairperson of the UNBC board of governors.

Joel McKay has served a provincially-appointed representative on the board since July 31, 2020 and was recently appointed to a second three-year term, which ends in July 2026.

“UNBC is one of the best universities in Canada. Access to exceptional post-secondary education in the North is vital to our ongoing success as a region,” McKay said. “We attract outstanding students who are supported by world-class faculty and staff, which sees UNBC graduates enter the world equipped with the knowledge they need to effect meaningful change. The Board is grateful to all the supporters, champions and communities who inspire UNBC to be amongst the best at what we do.”

In addition to his role with Northern Development, McKay, an author and former journalist, is an incoming graduate student at UNBC studying English literature,

Lawyer Michael Reed has stayed on as the vice-chairperson of the board. Reed is a member of the Red Pheasant Cree First Nation, a UNBC graduate with a bachelor of commerce degree and sits on the Board of the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia

The 15-member board of governors oversees the management, administration and finances of the university. The next meeting of the board is Sept. 15.
