The Conservation Officer Service says a man in Dawson Creek has been fined $10,000 for killing a bull moose during a closed season and hunting without consideration for the lives and safety of others, both violations under the Wildlife Act.
The man in question, Rory Friesen, was sentenced on Nov. 29 in Dawson Creek court and given a forfeiture order for the animal killed.
"Friesen is also prohibited from accompanying hunters anywhere in B.C. for three years," explained the service in a social media post.
The illegal hunting was reported to have happened in September 2020, they added, when Friesen shot a bull moose as it was crossing a road near Dawson Creek, while a motorist was driving nearby.
The motorist reported the incident after spotting Friesen injure the moose and use a firearm to kill the animal while it lay on the side of the road.
The motorist was in their vehicle on the road during the incident and were not injured, said the service.
The service says they hope the penalty will deter others from similar activity and the majority of the penalty will go to the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation.
