Roughly 20 hours after a water main burst and flowed water onto the streets of downtown Prince George, crews are allowing traffic through the affected area.
A six-decade-old cast iron pipe burst in front of the Canadian Western Bank building around 6:30 p.m. last night (Nov. 14), in which crews responded and were able to shut off the water an hour later, but it closed Third Avenue between Victoria and Brunswick Streets.
Water service was lost to nearby properties and residents.
City crews were able to fix the damaged pipe, installed in 1956, and replace it with a new 1.5-metre section of plastic main.
Excavation of the water main was finished at 3:45 a.m. today (Nov. 15); the water was turned back on nearly two hours earlier.
The city says the road will be repaved next week and they also thank residents and commuters for their patience during the operation.
