Prince George parks flooded by rising water levels

City says Fraser River is at highest level for the season

Heavy rainfall in northern B.C. earlier this week has risen river levels, or flooded them completely, to their highest peaks of the Spring season.

The run-off from the Peace region has made its way down to upstream sections of the Fraser River in Prince George, causing some flooding in and around Paddlewheel and Cottonwood Island Parks.

As a result, the city has closed off some sections of trails for public use.

According to the B.C. River Forecast Centre, the Fraser River continues to be on a high streamflow advisory since the weekend.

It’s unknown at this time how long the blocked-off sections in Cottonwood Island Park will stay closed.

The river itself has surpassed 8.8 metres in the South Fort George area, causing some floodings in Paddlewheel Park.

The city is reminding all residents to be careful at all riverfront parks and trails.

The River Forecast Centre encourages people to stay away from unstable embankments along the Upper Fraser River and other fast-flowing tributaries.
