A milestone event for avid Prince George bikers was pushed to this fall as a result of COVID-19’s initial outbreak.
However, GoByBike Week in the northern capital will now have to wait until spring 2021 as local organizers are hoping to plan events involving large gatherings for the campaign’s 10th anniversary, that is if the current 50-person maximum is lifted.
According to Dane Greenwell, Urban Director for the Prince George Cycling Club and the city’s GoByBike Week Coordinator, several stations were set to commemorate the decade-long celebration.
“[We] didn’t want to have our first ever fall event to stifle our 10th anniversary,” he tells PrinceGeorgeMatters.
“PG had never participated formally with a fall event before and even though the province is going ahead with one starting Sept. 28.”
Starting Monday (Sept. 28), and through Oct. 4, GoByBike Week is happening across B.C. as it continues to encourage residents to commute by the titled mode of transportation.
As COVID-19 has forced people to work from home, the former ‘Bike to Work’ name changed and now includes incentives and prizes for those who sign up individually or as a team.
Greenwell says despite no events taking place to mark 10 years of biking to places in town, he hopes Prince George can show the province its two-wheeled spirit ‘even as temperatures drop.’
“We want people to think “Bike To Groceries” and “Bike to Visit,” small social circles,” he says.
“The more local people register and ride with the province's fall event, the more likely we will be able to support a formal week of events locally in the fall in the future.”
As of this publication (Sept. 24), there are 42 bicyclists and seven teams registered in Prince George.
