Springwood elementary school is ready to reopen its doors as it welcomes back students today.
Approximately 190 students are registered to begin classes at the school, which closed in 2010.
Teachers and school administration have prepared classrooms and organized new resources to offer students an engaging and exciting learning environment, according to School District 57.
"Springwood staff are getting ready and have worked hard from April until now with such commitment and they will continue until the last minute," said school district chair Tim Bennett.
In April, the school district approved the recommendation to reopen the school in response to last year's Supreme Court decision calling for smaller class sizes.
The school reopened in an effort to prevent area schools from running overcapacity and to reach new class size mandates.
"I'm excited to start the school year and looking forward to meeting Springwood students and families," said school principal Kelly Johansen.
"A lot of planning and work has gone into preparing Springwood and now we finally get to move forward with the school year. All of the Springwood staff is eager to start and are busy getting things ready in the school for September start up. Enthusiasm and pride has been evident throughout the entire school opening process."
School district staff completed work on the interior and exterior of the building including painting, roof replacements, lighting, gymnasium floors, roof exhaust systems, bathroom renovations sidewalks and handicap sidewalks/entrances.
Additional school projects will continue into the fall including the installation of whiteboards, sound systems, bus lanes and fencing.
