A 15th player from last season’s Prince George Spruce Kings championship-winning team has chosen a future with an American college hockey program.
Nick Poisson has announced his commitment to playing for the Providence College Friars in the NCAA Division One Hockey East conference starting in 2020.
The soon-to-be 18-year-old (Aug. 15) put up an impressive rookie campaign in the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) this past year, recording 30 points (14 goals, 16 assists) in 58 regular-season games with the Spruce Kings.
He was also instrumental in the team’s supporting cast during the Fred Page Cup playoffs, scoring four goals and nine points en route to the title.
At the 2019 National Junior ‘A’ Championship, Poisson was the most consistent player by potting a goal in all six games to win the tournament’s scoring race and second among total points behind teammate Layton Ahac.
The Vancouver product got to play a historic season alongside his older brother Ben with both of their names etched onto the Fred Page and Doyle Cups.
Providence College has a prestige men’s ice hockey program that has made six straight NCAA Frozen Four Tournament appearances, winning the 2015 title in Boston.
Notable Friars alumni include Brian Burke, Lou Lamoriello, Ron Wilson, current Vancouver Canuck Tim Schaller, and Noel Acciari, who was recently picked up by the Florida Panthers along with Prince George native Brett Connolly.
