Mounties in Prince George have taken a man into custody after he was seen smashing numerous windows with a table at a downtown coffee shop in the Parkwood Mall.
In videos provided to PrinceGeorgeMatters by Nicole Lopez, a man tries smashing numerous windows with tables and rocks until broken. Bystanders appear to talk to the man, but he did not stop. When police arrive, the man lays down on the ground with his hands behind his head and is taken into custody.
Nisha Muchalla, owner of Second Cup Coffee Co., says they have people that hang around the facility and usually leave when asked, but noted today was 'extreme.'
"We open at six o'clock every day so it was unusual this morning I guess,'" she said to PrinceGeorgeMatters.
"We don't know where he came from, how he came around. He started picking up a chair and you know, started smashing the windows."
"We're lucky none of the customers got hurt. Usually, we have people sitting outside, they didn't get hurt. So you know, windows can be replaced but we are thankful nobody got hurt."
Customers and staff sheltered in place while police were called and Second Cup is closed for the remainder of today (Aug. 19).
RCMP Cpl. Darren Blom told PrinceGeorgeMatters the investigation is ongoing but they don't have an exact reason why the incident happened.
"Today we had numerous calls of an individual outside at the Second Cup Coffee store throwing rocks and tables through [windows]," he said.
"Members attended shortly after the report came in and arrested one individual just outside the location."
Cpl Craig Douglass says the 29-year-old man recently moved to Prince George and he was taken to hospital for assessment.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police remain on scene & Second Cup is closed for the rest of today (Aug. 20), the owner tells me. She adds the suspect never came in to order anything & she's thankful 'no one was harmed' from the incident around 9 a.m. | #CityOfPG
