Highlights from Prince George’s Senior Men’s Baseball League (PGSBL) from the week ending on Friday (June 21).
Monday, June 17
- 6 - D.O.B Contracting Gladiators
- 1 - JRJ Construction Orioles
Smart batting was the difference in the Gladiators’ first victory in their seventh game of the 2019 season.
They had 10 hits in the contest, including a lead-off triple from Calvin Todd in the sixth inning, eventually scoring the first of two in the frame to seal the five-run victory.
The defending-champion O’s had six hits, but were bested by the defence with nine fly-outs.
Tuesday, June 18
- 8 - Prince George Surg Med Midget Knights
- 6 - Inland Control and Services Tigers
Knights had five doubles in the game that resulted in four RBIs, two in the third inning for a game-high three-run frame.
The Tigers scored three runs in the final frame to get within two, courtesy of an RBI double by Ryan Hampe, but the designated home team would come up short.
Wednesday, June 19
- 12 - Queensway Auto World Red Sox
- 0 - Inland Control and Service Tigers
This was the second game in one week decided by mercy rule, thanks to the hot sticks of the Red Sox.
Pitcher Curtis Sawchuk not only threw seven strikeouts, but also clobbered a two-run homer over the left-centerfield wall.
The home team enjoyed leads of 3-0 and 5-0 before the seven-run fourth inning.
Thursday, June 20
- 4 - JRJ Construction Orioles
- 2 - Prince George Surg Med Midget Knights
The O’s got their third win of the 2019 season by doubling the Knights.
They also lead the season series between the two clubs, 2-0.
Redemption was also earned for JRJ after being the first team to lose to the winless Gladiators earlier in the week.
