The School District 57 board voted yes to reopen Springwood school in September.
The recommendation was approved on Tuesday in response to last year's Supreme Court of Canada decision and the agreement made between teachers and the provincial government calling for smaller class sizes.
In an effort to prevent schools from running overcapacity and to reach new class size mandates, School District 57 saw a need for additional classroom spaces required in the Hart area and the decision was made to reopen Springwood elementary.
The school which closed its doors in 2010, will undergo immediate staffing and transportation service plans and begin upgrades and necessary renovations before opening in the fall.
"These timelines are unprecedented," said Superintendent of Schools, Marilyn Marquis-Forster.
"But this is the most educationally sound solution and fiscally sound solution."
About 180 students will be enrolled for students from Kindergarten to Grade 7.
A catchment area for Springwood elementary will be established with revisions to Heather Park and Glenview School catchment areas.
Students currently in Grade 6 residing in the proposed new catchment area for Springwood will be permitted to remain at their current school for Grade 7.
Families affected will have five months of preparation time, a transfer process opportunity and a provision for Grade 6 students to remain in their current school for their Grade 7 year, if they choose to do so.
Families not living in the Springwood elementary catchment area, but would like to transfer their children to the new school, will be eligible to apply in April.
"By opening, we are entering into a long-term educationally-sound plan," Marquis-Forster said.
Households in the area will be contacted and a community information night in the Hart area is also in the works.
