We've only been in Prince George for five months, but a lot has happened news-wise in that short time.

We officially launched Sept. 4. Since then, you've welcomed us to the community with open arms, so thank you!

Now, in terms of news, we've covered everything from municipal elections and homicides to sports and everything in between.

We've compiled the top five stories of 2018. They weren't chosen by us. But rather you, the readers, based on our online stats.

Here they are:

1. Prince George election 2018: Unsure who to vote for? Read this

It isn't surprising that an election guide comes in at number one. Civic elections are an important part of democracy, and knowing who and what you're voting for makes a big difference. Once all ballots were counted and results announced, Mayor Lyn Hall was re-elected while Brian Skakun, Kyle Sampson, Garth Frizzell, Murry Krause, Susan Scott, Terri McConnachie, Cori Ramsay and Frank Everitt were elected to city council.

2. College Heights Secondary School in mourning after passing of student

Unfortunately, tragedy can strike at any moment and this story is an example. Back in October, College Heights Secondary School announced a second student had passed away suddenly. This was the second death in the school community in just under two weeks when a similar announcement was made on Sept. 26. Multiple services were brought in to help the community grieve.

3. Prince George driver arrested for refusing to give a breath sample during school pickup

This story is an example of what not to do. Starting Sept. 4, Prince George RCMP were cracking down in school zones over a two-week period. A Prince George driver was arrested and charged after refusing to provide a breath sample while they picked up their child from school. RCMP handed out a total of 208 speeding tickets, as well as 15 tickets for unsafe driving.

4. Menchie's Frozen Yogurt says goodbye to Prince George after five years

Now, this was just plain sad. Menchie's in Prince George announced on Sept. 17 it was shutting its doors permanently. That day was their last official day in business. The closure was attributed to several factors, including the rising cost of wages and goods, as well as wavering support from the public. On the last day, customers could get unlimited yogurt and toppings for just $5.

5. Reckless on the roads? You could end up on a new Prince George bad driver channel

If you're a bad driver, you might end up on the Internet and it's not for a good reason either. A Prince George man, who spoke to PrinceGeorgeMatters on the condition of anonymity, started the channel because of the worsening driving he was seeing from local drivers. The videos include everything from U-turns in the middle of a street, a U-turn on a red light in an intersection, non-use of signals and other dangerous driving infractions.
