Local law enforcement has raised more than $5,100 dollars for Special Olympics B.C. athletes in the Prince George area for its 2019 campaign.
On the afternoon of Thursday, June 6, over 130 runners and walkers came out to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics B.C., which was hosted at the Prince George RCMP Detachment.
The 3.5-kilometre walk or run was primarily made up of peace officers, staff, and family of various public safety agencies, including the B.C. Sheriffs Service and the Prince George Detachment of the RCMP.
About 40 Special Olympic athletes along with coaches, friends and family also participated.
Following the run, the RCMP hosted a public barbeque, social gathering, and 50/50 raffle on 5 Ave. next to the detachment.
The winner of the 50/50 raffle took home over $1,500.
"This is such a rewarding event to be involved with," says Insp. Shaun Wright, Operations Officer for the Prince George RCMP in a news release. "The enthusiasm of these athletes is contagious and makes us all want to help them to achieve their goals in their respective sports."
Including a car wash at Canadian Tire earlier this month led by Prince George Fire Rescue, the fundraising efforts exceeded $5,100 and all the money raised will be donated to Special Olympics B.C. to support athletes from the Prince George area.
